Not even a legal fight with New Zealand Rugby could prevent the new NRL club from unveiling a motif they believe will unite a nation.
The PNG Chiefs officially unveiled their inaugural NRL jersey and logo during a launch event in Port Moresby on Wednesday. Promising players Gairo Voro, Morea Morea, and Finley Glare presented the black strip, which was designed by local Papua New Guinean artists and incorporates cultural symbolism, including a feather headpiece, cassowary bone, and kina shells. Dignitaries including PNG Prime Minister James Marape and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong attended the event.
The unveiling proceeded after New Zealand Rugby recently failed in an urgent bid to secure an injunction blocking the use of the Chiefs brand name. The PNG Chiefs are scheduled to enter the NRL competition in 2028 under head coach Willie Peters, having already secured high-profile player signings including Jarome Luai, Zac Lomax, Brian To’o, and Alex Johnston.
