Victor Wembanyama admitted he was overthinking and playing indecisively during the San Antonio Spurs' 116-104 season-opening loss to the OKC Thunder. The star center endured the worst shooting night of his career, shooting 1-of-13 from the field and missing his first 12 attempts before scoring on a third-quarter buzzer-beating dunk assisted by De'Aaron Fox. Following the game, Wembanyama stated he needs to hesitate less, think less, and return to having fun on the court.
Despite the shooting struggles, Wembanyama totaled 12 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks across 34 minutes, relying on a 10-of-12 mark from the free-throw line. Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson defended Wembanyama after the game, stating the team struggled equally as a whole. Stephon Castle paced the Spurs with 24 points, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's 32-point display guided Oklahoma City to victory.
