Black's NHL debut will be a record-setting one regardless of his performance.
Florida Panthers rookie goaltender Cooper Black is set to make his NHL debut against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night. Standing at 6-foot-8, the 25-year-old will officially become the tallest goalie in NHL history, surpassing several 6-foot-7 netminders including Ben Bishop and Mads Sogaard.
Black was recalled from the AHL's Charlotte Checkers on October 20 following an upper-body injury to veteran Jacob Markstrom, who is expected out for 10 to 14 days. Head coach Paul Maurice praised Black's athleticism and readiness ahead of the milestone appearance.
