A small-market World Series matchup is not easing tensions between MLB team owners and the players' union on the issue of the salary cap.

Tensions between MLB and the players' union are escalating over the push for a salary cap ahead of the upcoming collective bargaining agreement negotiations. Prior to Game 1 of the World Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays, commissioner Rob Manfred stated owners are unified in wanting a cap, arguing small-market success is rare. In response, union chief Bruce Meyer called a salary cap a tool to suppress salaries and argued the current matchup proves the existing system functions well.
Bill Shaikin warns that the entrenched positions make a December lockout likely and jeopardize Opening Day next March. Meanwhile, Manfred confirmed MLB is monitoring federal investigations into Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter. Additionally, Meyer reported unresolved negotiations with LA28 regarding major league player participation in the 2028 Olympic Games.
