The Hyderabad-based cricketer needed just three overs to surpass Danilson Hawoe's mark of 25 catches, reaching 26 in T20Is during the 2nd T20I at Hagley Oval.
India fielder Tilak Varma set a new world record for the most catches in a calendar year in Men's T20Is on Saturday, October 24, 2026. Playing against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Varma took two catches inside the first three overs to reach 26 catches in 2026, surpassing the previous record of 25 catches set by Indonesia's Danilson Hawoe in 2025.
Varma secured the milestone by catching Tim Seifert off Arshdeep Singh and Daryl Mitchell off Bhuvneshwar Kumar after India elected to bowl. The match also featured lineup adjustments for India, with 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi replacing the injured Ishan Kishan and Prince Yadav replacing Mayank Yadav.
