Leo Atang secured a first-round stoppage win over Jonathan Exequiel Vergara on Saturday, October 24, at Utilita Arena in Sheffield. The 19-year-old heavyweight dropped Vergara three times during the opening round of their scheduled six-round contest on the Dalton Smith vs. Alberto Puello undercard. Following the third knockdown, the referee waved off the bout to improve Atang's unbeaten record to 9-0 with eight knockouts, while Vergara fell to 9-5.
Boxing News 24 noted that two of the knockdown sequences appeared to involve rabbit punches to the back of the head. Despite the controversy surrounding the punch placement, Atang earned his ninth victory in roughly 15 months since his professional debut. The York prospect is scheduled to make his next ring appearance on December 12 in Monaco.
