Jim Bowden believes that Teruaki Sato's market value will be too high for the Mariners to sign him as a free agent.

The Athletic's Jim Bowden projected Japanese free agent slugger Teruaki Sato to secure a five-year, $180 million contract, a valuation that would likely price out the Seattle Mariners. Bowden ranked Sato third in his free agent class, comparing his market value to Alex Bregman and Matt Chapman. An average annual value of $36 million would exceed recent contracts for stars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Mike Trout.
However, Sodo Mojo writer Jason Wang argues Bowden frequently overestimates player values, noting past inflated projections for Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto. Wang suggests Sato's 27% strikeout rate and defensive limitations make a massive deal unlikely. Instead, Wang believes Sato's final free agency deal could mirror Okamoto's four-year, $60 million agreement with Toronto, keeping Seattle potentially viable.
