Exclusive: Eddie Howe is on Man United's short-list to take over from Michael Carrick - but things may not be that simple for the Red Devils…

Manchester United would reportedly owe Newcastle United a significant compensation payout if they hire former Magpies manager Eddie Howe. Howe is featured on a two-man shortlist alongside Julian Nagelsmann should Michael Carrick depart Old Trafford. Newcastle are monitoring developments, having accepted Howe's decision to step down after five years in charge.
Howe earned roughly £6m annually under a multi-year deal extended in summer 2024, leaving several years on his contract. Newcastle would be owed millions, particularly after allowing key backroom staff members Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches, and Simon Weatherstone to leave alongside the head coach.
