Tendai ‘The Beast’ Mtawarira has revealed how the Springboks transformed their scrum into a weapon that opponents dread facing.

Former South Africa prop Tendai "The Beast" Mtawarira credited former scrum coach Matthew Proudfoot with transforming the Springboks' scrum into a dominant weapon. Speaking in an interview with Squidge Rugby, Mtawarira explained that Proudfoot, who joined the coaching staff in 2018, shifted the team's mindset from merely seeking ascendancy to actively aiming to punish opponents and win penalties on every scrum.
Mtawarira also commended current scrum coach Daan Human for sustaining those standards, as well as head coach Rassie Erasmus for fostering fierce internal competition. He noted that intense training battles between starters and the "Bomb Squad" bench players elevated the squad's performance during their 2019 Rugby World Cup triumph.
