Opinion: The Timeline Isn’t Right for Nikita Kucherov to Make Sense in San Jose

Following reports that Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov requested a trade, writer William Espy argues that the San Jose Sharks should not pursue the reigning Hart Trophy winner. Espy contends that while pairing Kucherov with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith would be entertaining, the Sharks are not close to being true Stanley Cup contenders and have systemic issues on the blue line.

Espy also highlights financial and roster hurdles, including Kucherov's current $9.5 million cap hit, an impending contract extension, and his age of 33. The writer suggests San Jose would be better served preserving assets to acquire a top defenseman, such as Detroit Red Wings blueliner Simon Edvinsson.
