New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes has scored five even-strength goals through his first 14 games of the season, putting him on an 82-game pace for 29 goals. The total puts Hughes on track to challenge the franchise record of 22 goals by a defenseman, set by Dougie Hamilton in the 2022-23 season and matched by Barry Beck for the Colorado Rockies in 1977-78.
James Nichols notes that Hughes is benefiting from an elevated 13.9 shooting percentage compared to his 5.6 career average prior to this season. Under head coach Sheldon Keefe, Hughes leads all Devils skaters in ice time with an average of 23:57 per game, though he has yet to score on the power play.
