The Story in 60 Seconds

Seven NBA players who signed rookie scale extensions in 2026 are subject to the league's poison pill provision during the 2026/27 season. This rule complicates potential trades by creating a significant gap between a player's outgoing salary for their current team and their incoming value for an acquiring team. The affected players are Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller, Amen Thompson, Ausar Thompson, Cason Wallace, Keyonte George, and Brandin Podziemski.

Under the provision, outgoing value matches the player's current-year salary, while incoming value averages current and future extension salaries. For example, Victor Wembanyama holds a $16,868,246 outgoing value but a $44,470,841 incoming value. The restriction will expire once the 2027/28 league year begins next July.
