The New York Islanders expressed anger toward Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Juuso Valimaki following a 5-3 defeat on Thursday night at UBS Arena. Valimaki took a full slap shot with one second remaining in the contest that struck Islanders forward Kyle MacLean as the final horn sounded. The play immediately triggered a postgame scrum on the ice as MacLean confronted Valimaki over the incident.
Islanders captain Bo Horvat and linemate Mitchell Chaffee both publicly criticized the shot as unnecessary and careless. Earlier in the matchup, New York erased two deficits to tie the score 3-3 before third-period goals from William Carrier and Jalen Chatfield secured the victory for the defending champion Hurricanes.
