The New York Islanders fell 5-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes at UBS Arena on Thursday night after a late third-period push slipped away. William Carrier scored the go-ahead goal with 5:08 remaining in regulation, and Jalen Chatfield sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Carolina jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Logan Stankoven and Jesperi Kotkaniemi before the Islanders answered in the second period with scores from Mitchell Chaffee, Brayden Schenn, and Victor Eklund. Despite Semyon Varlamov making 34 saves, New York struggled on special teams, going 0-for-4 on the power play to remain winless in regulation over their last six games.
