Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has been elected chairperson of the Indian Olympic Association's Athletes' Commission, with Indian men's hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh named vice-chairperson. The appointments come ahead of the national Olympic committee's elections scheduled for December 5. Neither Sindhu nor Singh will exercise voting rights in the upcoming polls, breaking with the commission's traditional convention.
Instead, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and swimmer Sajan Prakash secured the two voting positions in the general assembly. Meanwhile, 23 of 27 nominations were declared valid for eight Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit positions following withdrawals by several athletes. A potential contest between current president PT Usha and Adille Sumariwalla for the top IOA post is also being discussed.
