Former Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ might be a better feel-good story than he would be a fit in the Cincinnati Reds outfield.

Drew Koch of Blog Red Machine argues that free agent outfielder Ian Happ would be an expensive and ill-fitting pursuit for the Cincinnati Reds. While Happ is a popular target among fans due to his collegiate ties to the University of Cincinnati, Koch contends his projected two- to three-year deal worth $15 million to $22 million annually represents too high an investment for a team with numerous roster needs.
Koch points out that Happ struggled in 2026, hitting a career-low .218 average with significant splits against left-handed pitchers, posting just a .484 OPS against southpaws. Because current outfielder JJ Bleday already profiles similarly against right-handers, the author suggests Cincinnati target more affordable complementary options such as Tyrone Taylor, Randal Grichuk, or Austin Hays instead.
