Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga has reflected on his growth as a leader ahead of Sunday's preliminary final against Penrith. Ponga acknowledged he was not ready when first named co-captain alongside Jayden Brailey at age 23 in 2022, citing a lack of maturity and support during difficult early seasons.
Ponga credited coach Justin Holbrook's advice during the 2026 pre-season for relieving leadership burdens and helping him produce consistent form. Ponga also secured his long-term future by extending his Newcastle contract through at least the 2030 season.
