Mattingly cited Nola's heavy 40-to-50 pitch bullpen routine and noted that he skipped his Friday session to be ready for the start. The gamble faltered as Nola surrendered three runs across 21 pitches in the first inning.

The Phillies entered the contest on a three-game losing streak with their wild card lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks reduced to one game. Mattingly also adjusted the batting lineup by returning Trea Turner to the leadoff spot, while pitcher Jesus Luzardo is set to be eligible for reinstatement on Sunday.
