Pirates lose on walk-off home run, need a win on final day for a winning record, Yates to retire

The Pittsburgh Pirates were denied clinching their first winning season since 2018 after falling 4-3 to the Detroit Tigers on a walk-off two-run home run by Eduardo Valencia off Mason Montgomery. Pittsburgh held leads behind home runs from Brandon Lowe and Jacob Gonzalez, as well as an RBI triple by Bryan Reynolds, but Detroit rallied in the ninth inning to secure their 76th win of the season.

The Pirates now require a victory on the final day of the season to reach 82 wins, with Jared Jones scheduled to start. Following the game, pitcher Kirby Yates announced his retirement from Major League Baseball, while Tigers starter Justin Verlander concluded his 20-year career by allowing two runs over 5.1 innings.
