Former Pompey and Southampton man boycotting international match ‘as a person of principle’

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has announced he will boycott tonight's UEFA Nations League match against Israel in Hungary. The former Portsmouth and Southampton shot-stopper released a statement explaining that his decision is a personal protest against military actions in the Gaza region. He stated he will not participate despite the Republic of Ireland squad ultimately deciding to fulfill the scheduled fixture.

The Republic of Ireland squad delayed a training session by five hours to discuss whether to play the match before deciding to proceed. The team will wear black armbands, and reports indicate there will be no pre-match handshakes or pennant exchanges. Bazunu, who made 46 appearances for Pompey during the 2021-22 season on loan from Manchester City, will remain on 22 international caps.
