Philadelphia Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet sharply criticized his team after an embarrassing 7-0 home blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their season opener. Tocchet admitted the Penguins completely outplayed and outcoached Philadelphia, stating his team failed to win battles throughout the contest.
The Penguins dominated statistically, outshooting the Flyers 38-19 and generating 21 high-danger scoring chances to Philadelphia's five. Tocchet labeled the performance the worst defensive-zone play he had seen during his tenure, while defenseman Travis Sanheim called the defeat as ugly as it could have gotten.
