Glenn Whelan spent nearly four years at Sheffield Wednesday after joining on a free transfer from Manchester City under manager Chris Turner. Whelan played a pivotal role in the club's 2004/05 promotion to the Championship, scoring in the play-off final against Hartlepool United, and eventually made 159 appearances while scoring 16 goals across his spell with the Owls.
Whelan departed for Stoke City on deadline day after Wednesday accepted an offer behind manager Brian Laws' back. Following a long Premier League playing career with Stoke and Aston Villa, Whelan transitioned into coaching and briefly served as Livingston head coach before his departure in 2026.
