The Story in 60 Seconds

Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers was placed on paid administrative leave on Wednesday following player demands for his removal. The move comes amid an ongoing investigation into the collapse of defenseman Matthew Mayich during an outdoor preseason workout on Aug. 20. Mayich remains hospitalized and on life support due to exertional heat stroke and is not expected to recover, according to his family's attorney.

Seven team members sent a 26-page letter to university president Michael Crow alleging the workout was punitive, that Mayich was denied water, and that medical staff failed to follow heatstroke protocols. Assistant coach Mike Corbett will lead the team for upcoming games while the school prepares to name an interim head coach.
