Arizona State placed hockey coach Greg Powers on administrative leave on Wednesday as the school investigates the collapse of a player during an outdoor workout.

Arizona State University placed hockey head coach Greg Powers on administrative leave on Wednesday following the collapse of defenseman Matthew Mayich during an outdoor workout. Powers will miss the season opener against Lindenwood, with assistant coach Mike Corbett taking charge until an interim coach is named. Athletic director Graham Rossini announced the decision as the university investigates the incident.
The 21-year-old Mayich, an NHL prospect for the St. Louis Blues, collapsed on August 20 from heat stroke that limited oxygen to his brain and is unlikely to recover, according to a family attorney. The administrative leave comes after seven players and Mayich's parents urged university leadership to remove the coaching staff pending an independent investigation.
