Stephen Halliday scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Saturday night. Ottawa goaltender Linus Ullmark made 27 saves to secure the season-opening victory, while new captain Thomas Chabot led the attack with a goal and an assist. Michael Amadio also scored for Ottawa, while Claude Giroux contributed two assists.
Toronto replied with goals from Auston Matthews and newcomer Kirill Marchenko, while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 26 shots in the loss. Ottawa lost defenseman Jake Sanderson to an aggravated injury during the first period. The matchup also marked Toronto forward John Tavares's 600th regular-season game with the Maple Leafs franchise.
