The email announced that 39-year-old Simranjit Singh, who hasn't played for Ireland for almost four years, had decided to retire. There were warm tributes but it still made many wonder: why now?

Former Ireland international cricketer Simi Singh has officially announced his retirement after surviving acute liver failure through a life-saving transplant donated by his wife, Agamdeep. The 39-year-old fell gravely ill following a club match in May 2024 and was placed in a coma in Gurgaon, where doctors revealed he was roughly 30 minutes from death before receiving part of his wife's liver.
Now recovering in Mohali, Singh takes daily immunosuppressant medication and has shifted his focus to managing his own cricket academy. Across his international career, Singh earned 90 caps for Ireland, highlighted by an ODI century against South Africa.
