While this early in the NHL season isn’t known for many trades, this past summer and the Toronto Maple Leafs’ blockbuster acquisition of Kirill Marchenko has thrown that notion completely out. Anything can really happen and we wouldn’t be shocked…

Thomas Williams of Broad Street Hockey argues that the Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers make ideal trade partners early in the season. Philadelphia needs defensive help following poor performances and an injury concern for Rasmus Ristolainen. Meanwhile, Edmonton faces forward injuries to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, Matt Savoie, and Jason Dickinson, prompting reporter Elliotte Friedman to note that the Oilers are exploring a lateral defenseman-for-forward depth trade.
Williams suggests that the Flyers could target Oilers defensemen Ty Emberson or Shakir Mukhamadullin to bolster their blue line. In exchange, Philadelphia holds surplus depth at forward, with Williams floating players such as Nikita Grebenkin or Carl Grundstrom as possible trade options to satisfy Edmonton's immediate roster requirements.
