Despite losing the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs are right back in the conversation of being one of the true contenders. Extending Victor Wembanyama’s contract was another sign of that vision.
San Antonio Spurs forward Tobias Harris suffered a left calf strain during training camp and will miss the entire preseason. According to reporting from The Athletic's Jared Weiss, the 34-year-old veteran is considered questionable for the regular-season opener on October 20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Head coach Mitch Johnson confirmed the team will not rush Harris back and plans to reevaluate his status following the preseason schedule.
Harris joined San Antonio this offseason after signing a two-year, $31 million contract in July to provide veteran wing depth alongside Victor Wembanyama. In his absence, Julian Champagnie is expected to see expanded minutes at forward. The Spurs begin their preseason on October 8 against the Atlanta Hawks before facing Oklahoma City in an opening-night rematch of last year's Western Conference Finals.
