In an alternate universe, Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez’s big-league career could have ended as a World Series champion in the pinstripes. The vision, as absurd as it sounds, almost became a reality, save for one major demand.
Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez revealed that he nearly joined the New York Yankees late in his career, but declined after general manager Brian Cashman required him to make three minor league appearances before receiving a guaranteed big-league contract. Speaking on TNT Sports U.S., Martinez explained that he refused to sign without an immediate major league deal, stating he had promised himself he would never return to the minors.
Martinez instead signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009, concluding his 18-season major league career. Despite being a prominent figure in the Boston Red Sox rivalry against New York, Martinez also revealed he grew up a Yankees fan and previously requested trades to the team while playing for the Montreal Expos.
