Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt addressed his choice to remove starting pitcher Gavin Williams in the sixth inning of Monday's Game 2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Williams had struck out 11 batters and held a one-run lead before exiting at 98 pitches after allowing a single to Miguel Vargas. Vogt explained to reporters that keeping Williams in would have pushed his pitch count toward 110 to 115.
Relievers Erik Sabrowski and Hunter Gaddis subsequently surrendered three runs, allowing the White Sox to flip the score and claim the win. The defeat leaves the Guardians facing elimination, trailing 0-2 in the series with the next two games scheduled in Chicago.
