The World Boxing Association announced on social media that it has not approved a proposed super middleweight bout between Jaime Munguia and Nikita Zon. Munguia had been officially announced on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez against Christian Mbilli, despite having previously been ordered to defend his belt against mandatory challenger Bektemir Melikuziev.

Melikuziev had reportedly rejected step-aside money to allow the alternative fight to happen. Writer Patrick Stumberg argues that the sanctioning body should strip Munguia of his title rather than grant him an exception or name him a champion in recess.
