Sonny Gray has put retirement rumors to rest. The 36-year-old right-hander, who just completed a standout season with the Boston Red Sox, intends to pitch again in 2027 and remains open to returning to Boston as a free agent.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray announced he will not retire and plans to pitch in the 2027 season. Gray confirmed the decision via text message to The Boston Globe after Boston was swept by the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Series. The 36-year-old right-hander stated he still aims to win a World Series, whether with Boston or another organization.
Gray will enter free agency after the World Series, as his contract includes a $30 million mutual option with a $10 million buyout. He posted a 2.72 ERA during his 2026 campaign in Boston following a trade from the St. Louis Cardinals, though he expressed frustration after manager Chad Tracy pulled him in Game 2 against the Yankees.
