The Lightning assigned center Dominic James to the Syracuse Crunch on Friday in a move that may have caught some by surprise, but it’s not necessarily something to read too much into.

The Tampa Bay Lightning assigned center Dominic James to the Syracuse Crunch on Friday. The 24-year-old forward has been working his way back from a broken hand suffered during his first summer workout with the team. With the Lightning utilizing an 11-forward, seven-defenseman setup, the assignment allows James to regain game fitness after missing all of training camp.
James joined the Crunch lineup for Friday's game against the Rochester Americans and is expected to play Saturday against the Belleville Senators. Elsewhere, Nikita Kucherov and Scott Sabourin missed Friday's Lightning practice, with Kucherov recovering from an awkward fall on Thursday and Sabourin attending a scheduled doctor appointment.
