Staal was a late scratch before the Hurricanes’ 4-1 win over the Flyers on Sunday.

Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal missed Sunday night's road victory against the Philadelphia Flyers due to a lower-body injury. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour indicated that the issue arose last minute and suggested Staal might not immediately return, expressing hope that the injury is not serious and will not sideline the veteran center for long.
With Staal absent, Mark Jankowski moved into the third-line center role alongside Nikolaj Ehlers and Jordan Martinook, scoring in the third period. The Hurricanes have rebounded from a slow start with five consecutive wins to take first place in the Metropolitan Division ahead of their upcoming game against the Washington Capitals.
