Australia defeated South Africa by 214 runs on Day 5 at Kingsmead to take a 1-0 series lead. Chasing a target of 421, the Proteas were bowled out for 206, ending captain Temba Bavuma's 12-match unbeaten Test streak. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood led the Australian attack with figures of 6-49, dismantling the hosts with the second new ball after Aiden Markram offered stubborn resistance with a 237-ball 75.
Matt Renshaw earned standout honors for Australia by scoring 190 and 82 across both innings alongside taking two wickets. South Africa captain Bavuma and head coach Shukri Conrad lamented mental errors and batting collapses following an 11-month red-ball hiatus. The Proteas will look to regroup ahead of the second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha, where Kagiso Rabada is expected to return.
