The Washington Capitals suffered a 4-2 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh due to penalties and shifting momentum. Boone Jenner scored his third goal in three games to open the scoring, and Justin Holl added a goal in his Capitals debut. Ryan Leonard continued his strong start to the season by assisting on both Washington goals to extend his point streak.
Carolina dominated play during the second period, outshooting Washington 16-6. Andrei Svechnikov scored twice, including a controversial goal that survived a goaltender interference review and the late game-winning power-play tally, before Mark Jankowski sealed the win with an empty-net goal. Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson stopped 31 of 34 shots in the loss.
