The Montreal Canadiens fell short in a late comeback attempt, losing 5-4 to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night. Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki scored a power-play goal with 1:39 remaining to cut the deficit to one, but Montreal could not equalize. Alex Tuch powered the Capitals' victory by scoring two goals, including the game-winner late in the third period, while goaltender Jakub Dobes struggled for Montreal by conceding five goals on 24 shots.
The contest also featured the first NHL matchup between brothers Lane Hutson and Cole Hutson, with both defensemen registering points. Josh Anderson scored two goals for Montreal, while Jordan Kyrou, Ivan Miroshnichenko, and Justin Holl provided the remaining goals for Washington. The defeat dropped the Canadiens to 0-3-1 against non-Atlantic Division opponents to begin the season.
