Minnesota gave up a king’s ransom for Quinn Hughes, and according to The Athletic’s Harman Dayal, the Wild may soon have to decide whether that gamble is paying off.
NHL Trade Talk and The Athletic's Harman Dayal report that the Minnesota Wild may regret acquiring defenseman Quinn Hughes after he has yet to sign a contract extension. Dayal notes that Hughes could become a trade candidate before the deadline, warning that trading him as a rental would yield far less than the equivalent of the four first-round picks Minnesota originally gave up.
The Wild face growing pressure as they risk losing Hughes to free agency without a long-term commitment. Minnesota experienced a quiet offseason, losing forwards Mats Zuccarello, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Marcus Johansson, which complicates general manager Bill Guerin's efforts to convince Hughes to remain with the franchise.
