English clubs suffered a difficult opening round in the Champions Cup, with all four teams in action falling to defeats. Bath, Bristol, and Sale all began their campaigns poorly, while Saracens faced an immediate setback in their bid for a fourth European title.
Saracens were defeated in a high-scoring Pool 2 encounter against Connacht in Galway, a match featuring 13 total tries. Connacht fly-half Ciaran Frawley scored two tries in the contest, leaving Saracens coach Joe Shaw disappointed by the outcome.
