James McClean and Nemanja Matic have both refused to wear a poppy on their shirts. Here are the personal reasons behind each decision.

Former Premier League players James McClean and Nemanja Matic have both publicly explained their personal decisions not to wear a remembrance poppy on their shirts. Derry native McClean first declined the symbol in 2012 while at Sunderland, stating in a 2014 letter that the poppy honors British servicemen involved in later conflicts, citing the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings in his hometown.
Similarly, Serbian midfielder Matic opted out while playing for Manchester United in 2018. He explained that the symbol reminded him of experiencing the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia as a 12-year-old child. The Royal British Legion reiterated that wearing a poppy remains entirely a matter of personal choice.
