HE was nick-named the Bear of Brussels after his grizzly grapple with Anderlecht in the 1970s and he scored Wrexham’s first ever home goal in their proud European Cup Winners Cup history.
Former Wrexham AFC striker Billy Ashcroft reflected on the club's historic European Cup Winners' Cup campaigns during the 1970s. Ashcroft scored Wrexham's first-ever European home goal at The Racecourse against FC Zurich on September 27, 1972, heading home an assist from Mickey Thomas in front of around 18,000 spectators.
Ashcroft went on to play nine European ties for Wrexham and scored 95 goals in 273 appearances under manager John Neal. Nicknamed "The Bear of Brussels" following his performances against Anderlecht, he later transferred to Middlesbrough for £130,000 before eventually moving abroad to Dutch side FC Twente in 1982.
