Chelsea suffered defeat to a Championship side in a friendly this weekend but the focus of Xabi Alonso was on three objectives being fulfilled

Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat against Championship side Portsmouth in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Cobham on Saturday. With multiple senior players away on international duty, manager Xabi Alonso used the match primarily as a training exercise. The fixture allowed recovering players to build fitness, gave tactical practice, and provided developmental minutes for younger squad members.
The friendly also aimed to address Chelsea's defensive concerns, with the club having conceded a league-high 12 goals in the Premier League this season. Several key players, including Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Reece James, and Marco Palestra, have faced recent injuries, while forward Joao Pedro continues to consult a specialist regarding a knee issue.
