Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has explained why Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is the best player he shared the pitch with for England.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has named Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney as the best player he ever played with for England. Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, Gerrard praised the forward as a "monster of a footballer" who had everything, selecting him over other international colleagues such as Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard.
Gerrard and Rooney played together 69 times for England, while facing each other 23 times at the club level. Gerrard also discussed why England struggled to field a midfield trio of himself, Scholes, and Lampard, explaining that their overlapping attributes lacked a dedicated holding midfielder like Michael Carrick or Owen Hargreaves.
