Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mateus Fernandes is currently facing scrutiny following his €98m (£85m) summer transfer to North London. The 21-year-old was left out of Portugal's World Cup squad by Roberto Martínez and has now been omitted from new manager Jorge Jesus's first senior squad selection, remaining with the Under-21 team.
Despite the senior omission, Jesus affirmed that Fernandes and other young players remain under observation through ongoing discussions with Under-21 manager Luís Freire. Freire confirmed that Fernandes is being closely tracked and has a strong opportunity to prove his worth while competing for the Under-21 side.
