Spaniard had the choice of moving to England or the Bernabeu
Mikel Merino's father, Miguel Merino, has addressed why the midfielder moved to Arsenal instead of Real Madrid. Merino joined Mikel Arteta's side permanently from Real Sociedad in August 2024 for a fee rising to £31.6 million. Miguel Merino stated that Real Madrid opted for a different profile of player, while Arsenal offered the opportunity to compete for major trophies and play Champions League football.
Merino has since won the Premier League with Arsenal, making 85 appearances and scoring 16 goals across all competitions. Although he has seen limited starting opportunities in the Premier League this season, his father emphasized that the 30-year-old remains comfortable in north London as he competes at the highest level.
