Nic Maddinson and Travis Head to face the music after Pat Cummins opted to bat first in Durban

Nic Maddinson has made a dramatic return to Australia's Test team, opening the batting alongside Travis Head against South Africa in Durban. Maddinson was omitted from the initial tour squad but earned a late call-up after wicketkeeper Josh Inglis suffered a broken finger. Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first at Kingsmead, cementing Maddinson's first Test match appearance since 2016.
Maddinson's promotion moves Matthew Renshaw down to No. 5 to cover for Cameron Green's abdominal strain, while Beau Webster slots in at No. 7. The 34-year-old's comeback follows his recovery from testicular cancer last year. Australia coach Andrew McDonald highlighted Maddinson's versatility and strong record against pace and spin as key factors behind his unexpected selection.
