British tennis player Jodie Burrage shared screenshots of death threats and abusive messages she received on social media following her first-round defeat at the Chennai Open. Marking her return to the main draw of a WTA Tour event after 16 months, the 27-year-old lost 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to India's Vaishnavi Adkar before posting the abusive direct messages on Instagram.
Burrage tagged both Instagram and the WTA to question the lack of player protection, receiving support from fellow players including Germany's Eva Lys. The incident highlights an ongoing issue across the sport, with research by the Signify Group indicating that angry gamblers account for a large proportion of online abuse directed at female tennis players.
