Fernando Alonso knows exactly what Adrian Newey is ‘capable’ of as he extends Aston Martin deal

Fernando Alonso has officially signed a contract extension to remain with Aston Martin for the 2027 Formula 1 season alongside teammate Lance Stroll. Despite considering retirement after a difficult 2026 campaign plagued by car and engine unreliability, the two-time world champion highlighted Adrian Newey's leadership as a major reason behind his decision to extend his stay.

Aston Martin has scored only three points in 2026 amid major reliability problems with the AMR26 and its Honda power unit. Alonso told BBC Sport that Newey was the biggest factor in uniting the Silverstone-based team, expressing confidence that Newey can quickly resolve their technical setbacks.
