Bahrain GP technical analysis: Sepang brakes, recovery and Straight Mode
Key Things to Know
  • Sepang presents a different technical challenge for braking and energy management compared with the Baku circuit.
  • Brembo rates Sepang's braking difficulty at three out of five, with Turn 15 representing the most demanding stop.
  • The FIA capped qualifying maximum recharge per lap at 7.5 MJ, increasing to 8.5 MJ during the race.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Formula 1's relocated 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit presents a notably different braking and energy-management challenge than Baku. According to Brembo engineers, the circuit earns a moderate braking difficulty score of three out of five, with drivers braking six times per lap for a combined 13.2 seconds. The track features four Straight Mode zones that reduce aerodynamic drag across high-speed sections.

The layout offers significantly expanded energy recovery opportunities, reducing the risk of severe power exhaustion. The FIA established a maximum recharge of 7.5 MJ in qualifying, rising to 8.5 MJ during racing and 9.0 MJ when Overtake Mode is active. Technical simulations suggest teams can manage MGU-K deployment without resorting to dramatic super clipping, shifting the engineers' focus toward optimizing total lap efficiency.
