Former Red Bull boss Christian Horner has revealed that he played a surprise role in Lewis Hamilton's blockbuster F1 transfer to Mercedes in 2012.

Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has revealed in his book Drive that he played a role in Lewis Hamilton's move to Mercedes in 2012. Horner noted that after talks to bring Hamilton to Red Bull alongside Sebastian Vettel failed, he recommended to Mercedes Non-Executive Chairman Niki Lauda that the Silver Arrows sign the British driver from McLaren.
Horner stated that a gearbox failure for Hamilton at the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix marked the final turning point for his McLaren departure. Just five days after that race, Mercedes announced Hamilton on a three-year deal, leading to six world championships and 84 race wins.
